The First Annual HLH Soccer Tournament:Match For MEDS

Helen Keller once said that, “ Alone, we can do so little; together we can do so much”, and that alone is what we can use to describe the incredible weekend that our team had in Brooks, Alberta.

The first annual HLH soccer tournament was held on July 28th and it was day filled with fun, fierce competition, and delicious food. Our day started off as early 8 am in the morning as our team set off to the Duke of Sutherland Park to prepare for the tournament.

We had over 40 players in the tournament and a lot of excited spectators. Our teams were composed of adults, teenagers, and children. The games were filled with some glorious goals and all sorts of fancy footwork, and although everyone had their eyes on the grand prize of $150, players were courteous and everyone had a great time. Each team played three games and in the final round the Latinos team rose to the challenge and won the grand prize. What’s even more incredible is that the Latinos team donated their grand prize to HLH as part of the effort to fight the ongoing drug shortage in Guatemala.Their generosity really warmed our hearts!

Their kind act was not the only blessing HLH received that day, we were so blessed by various members of the Brooks community who not only helped us with setting up for the long day but also provided various equipment, volunteers, and great moral support.

Carol and Mr. Juan were one of the many people God used to help the fundraiser run smoothly. Carol helped us organize several teams and was one of our greatest promoters for the tournament. Mr. Juan helped us paint the field, set up corner flags and soccer nets, and served as a linesman. The City of Brooks allowed us to use the soccer fields for free and even went out of their way to help us cut the grass and provide garbage and recycling bins. We were also greatly supported by St. Joseph’s Collegiate. They supplied us with all the equipment we needed, from soccer balls to pylons, to tables and chairs. They promoted our event among their students, teachers, and members of their community.

We were also blessed to have three sponsors for this event! We sponsored by Dominoes, who provided us with over twenty gift cards to use as prizes, the Hardwood Ford Dealership donated a large sum of prize money, and Brooks McDonalds donated a 100 ice cream gift cards towards our prizes and our volunteers. We are so thankful for their kindness and because of their generous donations we were able to save money on prizes and allocate those funds towards our mission as HLH.

Match for MEDS was a success and we raised a total of $1041.00! This money will be used to send vitamins down to our partner clinics in Tactic, Guatemala and help us continue to carry out our healthcare mission.

Thank you to everyone who came out to play and supported us in one way or another, we are looking forward to seeing everyone again next year!

Together we can make an impact on the health of the nations and the generations to come.

The mission of HLH is to increase accessibility to medications and supplies for healthcare facilities in Guatemala.
